Central Market Vs Whole Foods – Our ratings of chains and grocery stores in the Puget Sound area show how each stacks up in terms of quantity and quality. To compare prices, our researchers used a 154-item list of common items for purchase options. In evaluating shops for the quality of products and services, we conducted surveys of consumers in the area. The numbers below summarize our findings; see our rating table for details.
Grocery Outlet, Walmart and WinCo Foods were the prize winners – where many families could save more than $2,800 a year.
Central Market Vs Whole Foods
Grocery Outlet, which offers a somewhat odd assortment of completely overlooked national surplus brands, offered prices that were about 27 percent lower than average. WinCo and Walmart were the remaining big savers, with prices 25 and 22 percent below average.
Despite Orders Not To Panic, Noe Valley Whole Foods Descends Into A Spot Of Controlled Chaos
For a family that goes to the market 250 times a week, a price difference of 22 to 27 percent could save $2,800 to $3,500 per year.
Although Grocery Outlet wins on price, it offers few options compared to other grocery stores: The site had us shopping for only 28 percent of the items in our cart.
Although Target’s overall prices were about eight percent lower than average, where we shopped, product prices were 11 percent higher than average. In general, we have found Target stores across the US that do not have scales, and therefore the product price is discounted in a piece or package for their price. (At Target and other stores that do price cuts, we used our own scales to weigh items to convert prices to pounds.)
When Amazon bought Whole Foods in 2017, many consumers raised expectations of Amazon paying similar prices for Whole Foods quality products. It didn’t happen.

Whole Foods has built a loyal following by offering quality products, foods, convenience foods and generic staples, and over the years has earned high marks in consumer insights, particularly in food production and quality. While customers continue to rate Whole Foods quite highly, its score dropped significantly on our “overall quality” question: Only 56 percent of customers surveyed rated it as “better” overall.
Our price survey found that Whole Foods remains among the most expensive local chains and grocers we visited — about seven percent higher than the average for all stores.
QFC’s prices were 41 percent higher than WinCo, 36 percent higher than Walmart, 23 percent higher than Fred Meyer, 15 percent higher than Target, 10 percent higher than Safeway and seven percent higher than Albertsons.
In terms of quality, Albertsons, Grocery Outlet, Safeway, and Walmart scored low for “fresh produce quality,” “meat quality,” and “overall quality.” Among them, Walmart placed last for “overall quality.”
Top Wallet Friendly Picks For Healthy Food Items At Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods And More
Ballard’s Market, Metropolitan Market, PCC Community Market and Thriftway were all rated “superior” in product quality and overall quality by more than 80 percent of their customers.
The businesses that counted the highest overall had prices that were at least 13 percent higher than the average for all stores.
In the largest chains, there are only small price differences between stores. The first discounts on Whole Foods don’t add much.
Like most other grocers, Whole Foods has widely advertised “losses”—discounts on a small number of items—to attract customers to stores (we also count sales prices when we calculate price comparison scores). But with Whole Foods, there’s a twist: At checkout, Amazon Prime members can instantly get an extra 10 percent off items on sale, plus special “member deals” on a few other weekly specials.
Leave Thanksgiving To Experts: Central Market, Whole Foods & Others Will Cookyour Bird
If you’re a frequent Whole Foods shopper, a 10 percent sales bonus is a pretty cool deal—though it’s unlikely that many shoppers will accumulate enough savings to cover the initial annual fee ($139/year or $14.99/month). .
Sometimes Amazon / Whole Foods Prime Member Deals are designed to attract a lot of attention. For example, on Valentine’s Day, the company promoted members to buy two dozen roses for $19.99 instead of $24.99. But since Whole Foods and Amazon offer a few of these discounts (usually only two or three items per week), most shops won’t save much money overall.
By replacing about one-sixth of the items in the shopping cart with cheaper generics and brand names in most stores, our total expenses decreased by about seven percent.
He also compared prices on organic produce and meat, checked out Costco, checked Trader Joe’s, and explored grocery delivery options.
